Even though our society has taken significant steps toward health literacy, it still isn’t discussed enough is mental health.

Mental health is defined as a state of emotional, psychological, and social wellness. It is influenced by many different factors and is always changing. These factors include feelings of self-esteem and independence, relationships, stress, and environment, to name a few. Disruption of these factors can lead to mental illness.

Mental illnesses are comprised of a wide range of disorders that affect mood, behavior, and thinking, such as depression, anxiety disorders, and addictive disorders.

Mental health and illness vary from person to person and can be challenging to identify. Common signs are excessive feelings of sadness or fear, extreme mood changes, and avoiding usual activities such as seeing friends or daily activities.

The stigma surrounding mental health problems often makes people feel like they will be looked down upon, and as a result, do not seek treatment as they should.

Having a mental health check-up is just as critical as a yearly physical check-up with your doctor. There is nothing to be ashamed of in bringing up your mental health concerns.

There is a range of treatment options for mental illness, including medications, education, therapy, and social support.

During times of confusion and uncertainty, much like what the world is facing with the current coronavirus pandemic, it is not uncommon to experience some of the feelings listed above.

If you think you are experiencing mental illness symptoms, speak to your doctor about a treatment plan that will work for you, or schedule a telemedicine appointment with one of our providers today.
